The monitor spec sheet is full of numbers, most of which are marketing. These are the four that genuinely affect your gaming experience.

Resolution vs Refresh Rate

Your GPU determines which to prioritize. If you can hit 144fps at 1440p, a 1440p 165Hz monitor makes sense. If you're on a mid-range GPU that struggles past 80fps at 1440p, 1080p 144Hz gives you smoother gameplay for less money. Match your monitor to your GPU, not your aspirations.

Panel Type

IPS: best colors and viewing angles, fast response, slight backlight bleed. VA: deepest blacks, best contrast, some ghosting in dark scenes. OLED: perfect blacks, fastest response, burn-in risk. For RPGs and atmospheric games — VA or OLED. For competitive FPS — IPS or OLED. For general use — IPS.

Adaptive Sync

G-Sync (NVIDIA) and FreeSync (AMD) eliminate screen tearing by syncing the monitor's refresh rate to your GPU's output. "G-Sync Compatible" means a FreeSync monitor that passed NVIDIA's validation — functionally the same as G-Sync for most users and much cheaper. Confirm your GPU brand before checking this spec.

Actual Response Time

Manufacturers advertise "1ms" for almost every monitor, but what they measure differs. GtG (Gray to Gray) is the honest spec — look for that number. MPRT is measured differently and appears better on paper. For competitive play, look for GtG under 3ms. For story games and RPGs, it doesn't matter at all.
