Same Source, Different Vision
Ragnarok Online launched in 2002 and became one of the most culturally significant MMORPGs in Asia. Twenty years later, two separate mobile remakes exist — both officially licensed by Gravity, the original developer, but built by different teams with different goals.
Millions of players have nostalgia for Ragnarok Online. Both mobile games target that nostalgia — but they interpret it differently. Ragnarok Origin tries to rebuild the original experience for modern hardware. Ragnarok M: Eternal Love tries to evolve it into something new. Which approach you prefer depends entirely on why you loved the original.

Faithfulness to the Original
Built by Gravity themselves — the people who made the original game. The maps, monsters, class system, and progression feel closer to what veterans remember. Prontera looks like Prontera. Payon feels like Payon. The classic job trees are preserved. If your goal is to relive 2002, Origin is the answer.
Eternal Love takes Ragnarok's world and rebuilds it with a chibi art style and modernised systems. It's recognisably Ragnarok — the monsters, the music, the locations — but filtered through a different aesthetic sensibility. Veterans will recognise it. Purists might not love it.
This criterion is entirely about what you're looking for. If you want the original Ragnarok in mobile form, Origin delivers. If you want a polished modern game set in the Ragnarok universe, Eternal Love is more refined.
Gameplay & Class System
The classic job progression — Novice to First Class to Second Class to Third Class — is intact. Skill point allocation matters. Stats affect your playstyle in meaningful ways. The game rewards players who understand how Ragnarok's systems work rather than just following a guide. Guild Wars (WoE) is competitive and has real stakes.
Eternal Love streamlines many of the original's systems for mobile convenience. Auto-pathing to quests, simplified stat allocation, a rune system that adds build depth without the original's complexity. It's easier to play but offers less of that classic "I built something specific" satisfaction.
Origin wins for players who want depth. Eternal Love wins for players who want to enjoy the world without theorycrafting their character build for an hour before levelling.
Community & Content Volume
Launched globally in 2022 — it's younger. The community is smaller but passionate, especially in Southeast Asia and Latin America where Ragnarok's original playerbase was strongest. Content updates are consistent but it doesn't have five years of events and expansions behind it yet.
Launched in 2018. Five-plus years of content, a huge playerbase, and an established economy. The guilds are active, the markets are liquid, and there's always someone to party with. It also has the advantage of being the Ragnarok mobile game that most content creators and guides cover.
An MMO lives and dies by its community. Eternal Love wins this by sheer numbers and maturity — but that also means more entrenched P2W dynamics and a wider gap between veterans and newcomers.
Monetization & P2W Reality
Both games have significant pay-to-win elements. This is worth stating plainly: if you want to be competitive in end-game PvP in either title without spending, you will have a hard time. That's the honest reality of both games.
Ragnarok Origin uses a gacha system for equipment and cards. The equipment gap between free and paying players exists but is manageable at mid-game. WoE is where the wallet starts to matter most.
Ragnarok M: Eternal Love has more years of power creep behind it. New players face a larger gap to close. The rune system, costume stats, and limited equipment have accumulated. Getting competitive takes more time or more money.
For casual play and enjoying the story content, both games are accessible for free. For serious PvP and guild competition, expect to spend or accept being outgeared. Neither game is more honest than the other on this front — they're both traditional mobile MMO business models.
The Nostalgia Factor
This is the criterion that matters most for anyone who played the original. Both games know their audience — every long-time Ragnarok player is looking for something specific when they boot up a mobile remake.
The music. Both games use remixed versions of the original Ragnarok Online soundtrack. The Prontera theme, the Payon theme, the Morroc theme — hearing them again is the whole point for many players. Both deliver this.
The monsters. Porings, Lunatics, Baphomet, Sohee, Orc Lord — both games have them. Both bring the monster art back in 3D form. Origin's versions are more faithful to the original pixel art. Eternal Love's versions are more polished and animated.
The feeling. This is where they diverge. Origin feels like Ragnarok. Eternal Love feels like a game inspired by Ragnarok. If that distinction matters to you, it tells you exactly which game to play.
Which One Should You Play?
Unlike some comparisons, this one has a clear answer for most players — because the two games serve different needs very specifically.
If you played Ragnarok Online between 2002 and 2010 and you want that feeling back — Origin is what you're looking for. The job system is right. The maps feel right. WoE has stakes. Gravity built it, and you can feel that in the details that a licensed third party wouldn't know to preserve.
Choose Eternal Love if you're newer to the franchise, if you want a larger community, or if you want five years' worth of content to work through. It's the more polished game for a casual audience, and its playerbase means you'll rarely play alone.
